Napoleon proved himself to be skilled in the government
branch as well as the military. When the
revolution was over, he
decided that it was time for France to have a stronger, better government. He was
appointed first Consul on February 7, 1800. Napoleon was soon at war with Marengo armies.
He defeated them on June 14, 1800. By winning the battle at Marengo, Napoleon had broken
Austrias hold in Northern Italy. Napoleon then signed a peace treaty with Britain.
This treaty lasted about one year before the two countries were at war once again.
Napoleon
made France the best-governed country in the world. He also laid down a new legal code,
which he called The Code Napoleon. This code stated the rights, and duties to all
citizens. On August 15, 1802, Napoleon was appointed first consul for life.
In 1804, Napoleon was crowned Emperor of France. Napoleon also created the
Legion of Honor, which is still awarded today.
