Exile and Escape
In 1813-1814, the coalition
armies invaded France. Napoleon fought with brilliant defenses, but he could not prevent
the capture of Paris. His own position as a general fell.
Talleyrand, who once served Napoleon rose against him. Napoleon was forced into exile
on the island of Elba. Napoleon, however escaped from Elba in March of 1815, he landed his
escape ship secretly near Cannes. When Napoleon returned to France, King Louis fled. From
April to June 1815 was the last but most exciting chapter in his great
heroiccareer-"The Hundred days."
Napoleon
never lost a battle, except his last and hardest one. Waterloo. He fought in many long and
harsh battles, but Waterloo was the biggest of his life. He acted quickly to break the new
coalition formed to take down his powerful army. Napoleon constructed a new army for the
Battle at Waterloo. In early June of 1815, Napoleon lead his army into Belgium, to battle
one grand army made up of British, Dutch, and Hanoverian troops. A huge thunderstorm
occurred during the battle, making it difficult to fight. Napoleons army advanced on
their opponents, but it was to late. As Wellington waved his hat for general advance on
Napoleons men, he outflanked the French army. He fled from the battle ground where
over 60,000 of his own faithful soldiers lay dead or dying.
